The complete package

The new $220 million Hobsonville motorway in northwest Auckland was opened in August - six months ahead of schedule. The elegant, sweeping motorway is a six kilometre long, four lane motorway between Upper Harbour Bridge in the east and Westgate in the west; and a three kilometre extension of the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) from Westgate. It features a range of CSP’s products including Oclyte™ Streetlighting columns, Nu-Guard 31™ Barrier System and more.

“We supplied 484 Oclyte™ Streetlight columns which is the largest order we have ever filled on one project,” says Craig Kitchen, Area Sales Engineer Auckland – Columns for CSP.

“It took nearly two years for the installation of all the columns including all the cabling and foundation work,” says Jacob Hammond, Supervisor for Integrated Traffic Solutions, the company sub contracted by HEB Construction to handle all the lighting on the new motorway. “As a section of the motorway was completed we would then be able to install the columns. All but a few of the columns were standard, there were a couple of made-to-orders which CSP manufactured separately for us. They did a good job getting everything to us. It was a particularly big job!”

The new section of motorway also required the installation of a considerable length of road safety barrier. Adrian Rodriguez, Area Sales Engineer Auckland – Barriers for CSP explains, “the consultants for the project nominated the use of Nu-Guard 31™ Steel Guardrail System. We supplied:

  • 8,462 metres of Nu-Guard 31™ Steel Guardrail
  • 77 X-350 Terminal Ends on timber posts
  • 47 Trailing End terminals
  • 10m of TL-3 transition to TL-4 barrier, and
  • One Universal TAU Crash Cushion.
“We are extremely pleased we were able to deliver the project to NZTA six months ahead of the scheduled time frame,” says Gary Skepper, Construction Manager for HEB Construction. “It helps that all our subcontractors and suppliers worked closely with us to achieve this goal. That includes CSP who, after a road safety audit, were requested to supply an additional 3kms of Nu-Guard 31™ Steel Guardrail at very short notice. They delivered everything on time and we completed the project ahead of schedule. It was a really good effort on their part.”

The Hobsonville motorway completes the northern section of the Western Ring Route, a Road of National Significance, connecting the North Shore and West Auckland and improving access to the growing northwest areas of Kumeu and Massey. When complete, the Western Ring Route will provide a 48 kilometre-long motorway alternative to SH1 through central Auckland, and provide improved transport links between north, west and south Auckland, and to and from Auckland International Airport.
